The advantages of languages and bilingual education
Bilingual education is at the heart of controversy and debate in the US, and has been for an extremely long time ever since the introduction of different cultures and races, which is happening as much today than it ever has been. The controversy is due to the conflicting opinions and interests that relate to education and culture in the US, linking to racial discrimination and other deeper underlying educational philosophy.
You might be confused as to what exactly is meant here, so let’s make an example. Christian religious teaching in schools is seen as good by some since it promotes the production of good American citizens, but there are moral implications to the enforcement of such teaching. In the same way, using schools to eradicate immigrant cultures of their origins can be seen as immoral and wrong, but ensuring that all American citizens are taught American ideologies can help bring everyone together.

Bilingual education is concerned with preserving and upholding other cultures in the American educational system. A student who is from another culture has the right to preserve his or her own language, and teaching in other native tongues aside from English forms the center of this preservation. So, whether a student is writing a term paper, or reading through history research paper topics, then there should be the tools and services available within the educational system to allow for native languages. Not only that, but native languages prevalent in relevant areas in the US should be taught in equal measure to English, to preserve culture and enrich the learning experience for all.

There are many advocates of bilingual education but there are also many critics. Critics often state that for bilingual education to be properly implemented then there needs to be a much more documentation for the teaching of other languages and similarly for teaching methods. In the 1980’s many states used bilingual education, but the lack of structure and relevance saw bilingual education fail by the 90’s.
What hope is there for bilingual education today? If positive and effective multilingual teaching is to happen then respect must be placed for both the American culture and the secondary culture. Emphasis must also be placed on not only the preservation of all student’s cultures and languages, but in nurturing high level English skills for every single student. Students should also be allowed to choose how much of each language they learn, depending on their skills and language background.
