Getting motivated for your studies
I am approached time and time again by students desperately searching to increase their personal discipline and get in the zone so that they achieve the best marks. The irony is not lost on me however, that the very act of them asking other people for advice completely goes against the idea of personal motivation. Having said this, it is true that real progress can be made with advice given to students on the subject of personal motivation. In this article I will draw from personal experience I have had with teaching students to better themselves and become more studious, to help others who need it. It is important to say right from the start that motivation is the hardest thing to teach to students, the best thing you can do is provide them with the best means to be motivated.

The first thing I would recommend to students is to clean up their act, quite literally. Students need order and cleanliness around them, since this will make them feel more educational, which acts like a positive feedback loop. It goes hand in hand with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a pro-active approach to life in general. Eating well and exercising keeps the brain in top condition, priming it for education and examinations. With a tidy and ordered workspace it gets much easier to find and organize your educational materials, making the time you spend learning and revising much more effective. Concentration is of huge importance, and any breaks in concentration can be a real detriment to revision. Studies suggest an effective increase of 20 minutes for every hour of study occurs when a student’s concentration is broken during study.

Individual learning and revision is important, but so is group learning. Also, standard book learning is important, but so are other forms of learning, like experiential learning. Increasing the diversity in the way you learn will increase you understanding of subjects, and better your ability to describe them, so never underestimate the importance of this. When it comes to efficient learning, there is no ‘one size fits all’, and every student’s differences means differences in learning styles that will be most effective for the individual.
You should also appreciate subject specific styles of learning. For example, scientific and math subjects require much more question and answer working, and honing your ability so you know how to write a biology lab report, for example. Creative and artistic subjects require you to develop your skills of expression and debate, so that you have prowess over your ability to communicate your thoughts and feelings with others.
