Global warming is the most detrimental issue with regard to human civilisation, and will be the most important topic for the current and future generations. This is because of the global effect that global warming may have, and the severity of the problems that it may cause around the world.

Causes

The primary cause of global warming is the increase of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases have the effect of trapping radiation from the sun within the Earth’s atmosphere. Normal levels of these gases are crucial in keeping the earth warm enough for life to survive, but higher than normal levels have the effect of increasing the planet’s average temperature. Greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, and methane. Humans are contributing significantly to the increase of gases such as carbon dioxide by industrial practise and the burning of fossil fuels. Methane has also increased significantly due to intensive animal farming, and actually contributes to global warming far more than carbon dioxide.

Effects

The effects of global warming are many and continuously rising. The easiest to describe is the increase in global temperature which may rise by as much as five degrees by 2100, and a rise in sea levels by as much as 25 metres by 2100, caused by ocean expansion and not ice melting. Do not be fooled into thinking these numbers are small because they are not; they would have drastic implications and cause drastically negative changes on Earth. Effects that would be the result of such changes include:

·         Increasing variability – global warming will cause changing weather patterns across the world and will cause negative effects such as extreme droughts and flooding, and extreme weather events such as heat waves, hurricanes, and tornadoes. These link directly to human food production.

The primary difficulty in researching climate change is due to the complexity of the Earth’s dynamic systems. Not only is it difficult to link specific events to global warming, but it is impossible to accurately predict how the atmosphere and climate will behave in the future, no matter how accurately we know and understand the current situation. This makes research in the field difficult, yet exciting, and enlightening when new developments appear.
