What method of learning is the best for you?
During the many years I have spent as a teacher- and of course in the many years I was taught myself by teachers - I have learnt how to spot what forms of learning are most effective for me. When I was growing up I found I could remember quotes and scenes from television and movies much more easily than learning quotes and other such things from a book. At first this used to make me unhappy because, of course, most education is spent with your head in a book. However I should not have been so negative.
Since understanding myself better, I have yearned to give the same advice to my students. I am quick to point out that I cannot tell them how to learn most effectively, because each student is different and each student will have his or her best way to learn. Each year I set a “my personality research paper” for each of the students, which gives me a view into everyone's character. Where I see pointers to a type of learning style I let the student know. More often than not they are thanking me by the end of the year!

Most students are either visual learners, auditory learners and read-writer learners. The last group have it the easiest as most of the learning and revision material given is text-based and they usually do well in exams even if they do not appear to be trying as hard as others. To keep things fair I try to accommodate fairly for every learning style by giving interesting monologues and auditory accounts. I try to ensure students participate in verbal debates such as genetic engineering pros and cons and the causes and effects of global warming. I make students read out Romeo and Juliet quotes about love and I set time aside each day for visual learning activities.

I do sometimes find that there are students who get great advantage from hands-on activities. Hands-on learners are a well-known group of learners and I think it is unfair that most people see them as simply mechanics or the like when they grow up. They have the capacity to learn complex and subtle issues, just like any other student if you give it to them in the correct style. Even if hands-on tasks just involve moving around bits of paper to from, the correct answers to questions can prove to be a huge benefit here.
