What you need to know to be a good teacher
When I look back on my first days and weeks of education, I simply cannot believe how daunting the prospect of teaching originally seemed to me. I remember quite vividly shaking like a leaf on the first morning before class of the 6th grade, known that these students were not naïve like in first grade, and yet not mature enough to communicate on an adult level with like in college. It is the troublesome middle years, with unlucky old me being the one to push these students into a successful future. Once I got to know my class and became accustomed to the finer details of good teaching however, things became hugely rewarding for me.

I knew my class was developing quickly, so I would give them time to appreciate this, with assignments such as a ‘my personality’ essay, which I thought would help them understand themselves a little bit better, but of course primarily to let me understand them better. I set other essays such as ‘my vacation’ essay after school holidays, and let them read their essays to the class. Things like this help the class bond in my opinion, but I also try and teach the students other skills, such as proof-reading other student’s essays.
Even though the children are still young, debates about global warming effects on earth really help them grow and develop their skills of oratory and verbal expression and articulation on a topic that even young children are heavily exposed to, and this is something I know they will all need later on in life.

It is difficult to accommodate for every student in class because the skill set between the students always varies. Brighter students can sometimes complain that the subject material is too dull, but I go the extra mile by giving those students special assignments to help them hone their abilities. Students that need more help can often drain your ability to be equally attentive with every student, but there are ways to help them further without affecting everyone else’s learning, for example, by paring them up with other students who can help themselves with the other’s questions. This helps both students with their communication, and you can really see the difference you make when they conduct book reports in pairs.
Never neglect any student, and never be afraid to be disciplined with students who are troublesome or think they know better. Do you best to become a role model for the class, so that they look up to you, and become more inclined to impress you with great work!
