So there I sat in front of my computer, wondering about happiness. The cursor blinked continuously for the next thirty minutes or so and yet, I can't seem to write an essay about it. Happiness is on of the most fleeting of all feelings - in my opinion, of course - and I find it hard to say something about it.
Countless of books, stories, essays, term papers, research papers, poems, and even movies have been made about happiness and yet, the universal definition of it remains vague to me. What is happiness? I've read a lot of term papers and essays and I know that they haven't even come close to defining a kind of happiness that would really make me happy.
I continuously ask myself what happiness is. Is it getting what you want? But sometimes, we get what we want and yet we still feel empty. Is it getting an award for your work? But the award means nothing because the people who are around you barely know you. Is it the smile of the baby? But then the baby has not fully developed his cognitive skills to actually understand why he is happy with something. Is it being able to finally write my essay? Not really, since writing this essay does not really invoke true happiness - accomplishment, perhaps, but not happiness.
What then is happiness? Apparently, a lot of people have tried to define it, but so far, I have not been able to find one that satisfies me. And then, it hit me. Happiness is found whenever I am with the people I love - and whenever they show that they care about me. Happiness cannot be found from getting awards or getting what we want. It cannot even be found in the pursuit of intelligence. It is found with someone else."
